 TALENTED AND GIFTED PROGRAM

NORTH IOWA

PHILOSOPHY

Excellence in education is the goal for all school districts.  If schools are to accomplish this goal, they must be responsible for educating students to their fullest potential.  In order to do this for all students, the schools must meet the unique needs of the gifted child.

RATIONALE

Curriculum for the gifted and talented must encompass elements which distinguish it from being suitable for the education of all children.  The special educational needs of the gifted result from these characteristics that differentiate them from typical learners.  Therefore, a curriculum that is clearly related to the differentiating characteristics of these students can most effectively meet their unique cognitive and affective educational needs.
EACH CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO LEARN EVERY DAY IN EVERY CLASSROOM.

Program Goals

  • Provide experiences in the affective and cognitive domain.
  • Provide differentiated opportunities for in depth enrichment and/or acceleration of regular curriculum.
  • Provide in-depth study of self selected topics.
  • Provide learning experiences which focus on higher level and creative thinking skills.
  • Provide opportunities for students to communicate what they’ve learned through various products with appropriate outlets and audiences.
  • Provide ways to use various research methods and skills.
  • Provide opportunities to work with students/adults of comparable ability/intellectual peers.

Student outcomes

  • Students will effectively demonstrate appropriate communication skills.
  • Students will demonstrate creative and critical thinking skills and apply problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Students will display the ability to access and apply information and resources to achieve goals and create products.
  • Students will develop personal abilities, interests, and values and their community responsibilities.

 About Mrs. Peake

This is my 27th year at North Iowa  co-ordinating the Talented and Gifted program.  I work with K-12 TAG identified students, introduce and implement whole class higher order thinking skills in grades K-5, teach 5th guiding reading, help with keyboarding and on-line research and monitor highschool PSEO classes.

I love to read, walk on the beach and eat Baskins Robbins peanutbutter and chocolate ice-cream and Dove Chocolate.
